The English department aims at providing our students with a rich language environment in order to develop their English language proficiency and competency. We adopt the balanced literacy approach in the teaching of English, and design activities and lessons which will help students to develop their reading, writing, listening, speaking, viewing and representing skills.
In our English lessons, students learn the 220 Dolch Sight Words and Phonics starting from Primary One. Besides, we also teach our students the 12 reading comprehension strategies and 6 traits of writing to enable them to read and write better. Different graphic organizers are also used to assist students with their critical thinking skills in learning.
To provide opportunities for students to enhance their English skills, we organise a variety of interclass and schoolwide English activities (Acting Corner, Poetry Café, Writers’ Conference, Spelling Bee, Seniors’ Debate, Readers’ Theatre, etc.).
