Integrating Empathy into daily classroom
Integrating Empathy into daily classroom
By Ms Minnie Chung
How does empathy affect learning?
Science states that students who have an empathetic environment for learning have a higher capacity of learning. By fostering empathy, students experience a sense of safety and belonging, ultimately contributing to the development of a robust classroom community. Empathy also has a direct influence on academic achievement and helps students to be better listeners and develops their self-regulation skill in the long run.
How to bring empathy into our classroom?
When a teacher asks and provides feedback with empathy, it helps to create a supportive and conducive learning environment to our students. First of all, educators can practise active listening when students are speaking or sharing their thoughts. Give them our undivided attention, maintain eye contact, and use non-verbal cues to show that we are engaged and interested. Secondly, ask open-ended questions that encourage students to reflect and elaborate their ideas or experiences. This demonstrates a genuine interest in their perspectives and encourages deeper thinking. Thirdly, when providing feedback, emphasise students' strengths and areas of improvement. Offer Feedback in a positive and constructive manner Highlight their progress and offer specific suggestions for growth. Feedback has to be specific, descriptive and actionable. Clearly explain what the student did well and provide concrete examples to support your feedback. This allows students to understand what they can do to further improve. Along with feedback, provide guidance and support to help students overcome challenges or address areas of improvement. Offer resources, strategies, or additional assistance to facilitate their growth and success. Furthermore, prompt students to reflect on their own learning and progress. Ask questions that encourage them to think critically about their strengths, areas for improvement, and strategies they can employ to enhance their learning. Last but not least, after providing feedback, check in with students to ensure they understand and address any questions or concerns they may have. Offer ongoing support to monitor their progress.
To be an effective and loving educator
An empathetic teacher has the ability to enhance learning. As James Comer said, “No significant learning can occur without a significant relationship.” By implementing empathy in the classroom, teachers can create a positive and nurturing learning environment where students feel valued, supported, and motivated to reach their full potential.
