When Life Disappoints, Rest a Moment
When Life Disappoints, Rest a Moment
By Miss Ashley Mok
Like a roller coaster ride, life is filled with both exhilarating highs and challenging lows. Our journey through different stages often evokes a wide range of emotions, from happiness and excitement to frustration and disappointment. As students, we inevitably face various hurdles such as tests, exams, and interviews, which can trigger negative emotions. In such moments, it is common to hide our true feelings and place blame upon ourselves. However, is this truly an effective approach to manage our emotions?
During my first year of teaching, a poignant memory remains etched in my mind. I vividly recall one of my students, a dedicated and hardworking individual who consistently strived for academic excellence, breaking down in tears upon receiving her test result. To her dismay, the outcome fell short of her expectations and the disappointment engulfed her like a gray cloud. Her confidence shattered, and she felt as if her hopes had been dashed. This experience raises an important question: How can we confront and overcome setbacks?
Let me share a poem with you!
Love yourself despite your imperfections
Do you not feel compassion for yourself
as you struggle through life?
You are so eager to help your friends, but you treat
yourself so poorly.
Stroke your heart once in a while and tell yourself,
“I love you.”
– Haemin Sunim (The Things You Can See Only When You Slow Down)
When life brings disappointment, it is important to take a moment to pause and rest. Surround yourself with things that bring you joy and comfort. Whether it's visiting your favorite place that makes you feel at ease, listening to a peaceful song, or indulging in your favorite snacks, give yourself permission to recharge. Taking this time and space allows for healing and becomes crucial in gathering the strength and resilience needed to continue your journey forward.
